History . The manor of Cannings was recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book as held by the Bishop of Salisbury.. Horton is first attested in 1158. The place-name is a common one in England and derives from Old English horu "dirt" and tūn "settlement, farm, estate", presumably meaning 'farm on muddy soil'.. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Bourton manor was an estate of the Ernle family.

St Mary the Virgin, Bishops Cannings. A large Grade 1 cruciform church with a spire. It is almost entirely Early. English with some Norman and some Perpendicular work. The chancel is rib-vaulted. and there is a nave roof of 1670. The east window is by Wailes. Opening arrangements: Open daily. Address: New Park St, Devizes SN10 1DS.

For most of its history Bishop's Cannings was a large parish which included the detached tithing of Chittoe and the chapelry of St. James, sometimes called Southbroom. Bishop's Cannings proper contained the tithings of Cannings, Bourton and Easton, Coate, and Horton. The chapelry included the tithings of Roundway, Wick, Nursteed, and Bedborough.
